“Washing the Hare” offers a glimpse into the serendipitous moments that unfold amidst the idyllic landscapes of the Wiltshire Downs. It’s a testament to the intimate relationship between artist and environment. As one traverses the undulating fields of this picturesque region, the presence of hares becomes an integral part of the natural tapestry. Their graceful forms weave seamlessly into the fabric of the countryside.
On a fateful day, amidst one such excursion, I chanced upon a hare engaged in the mundane yet captivating act of grooming itself. It was a timeless scene, both familiar and enchanting. Captivated by the creature’s unassuming grace and the inherent poetry of its movements, inspiration struck like a bolt of lightning. It was a moment of revelation, as I envisioned the hare’s ungainly pose immortalized upon canvas—a testament to the beauty found in the everyday.
When the time came to translate this vision into art, I opted for a departure from my signature style, embracing a more relaxed and spontaneous approach. Eschewing the intricate “tendrils of colour” that had come to define my earlier works, I embraced a looser, more overtly figurative style—a bold step towards uncharted creative territory. Harnessing the fluidity of acrylic pens, I sought to imbue the composition with a sense of dynamism, capturing the essence of movement with each stroke of the brush. Thus, “Washing the Hare” emerged as a celebration of simplicity and spontaneity—an ode to the timeless allure of the natural world.
Throughout my journey as an artist, I’ve tried various surfaces & colours… From acrylics on boxed canvas to the refined oils on board I now employ. Each combination wields a distinct influence over the final outcome. Canvas imbues a rustic charm, its weave adding texture. For intricate details, only oil on board suffices, offering subtle nuances and unmatched ability to blend.
Yet, my attention extends beyond the artwork itself; the frames for Original Artworks hold equal significance. Through experience, I’ve learnt how a well-selected frame can elevate a piece, sometimes even reshaping its interpretation. Every choice, from canvas to frame, is a deliberate step towards crafting not just art, but an experience.
