Rainbow’s Shoulder emerges as a result of the artist’s exploration into textured, emotive backgrounds. The result deviates from the neutral tones typically seen in her wildlife portfolio. This approach grants the freedom to wield expressive colour, with the striking addition of red dry-brushing at one corner, injecting a sense of drama into the mottled deep-blue wash of the canvas. It lends an air of tension to the work; a hint of what’s either incoming or passing.
In portraying the Badger, the artist used a technique employing white brushstrokes as the foundational layer. Subsequently, she applied a ‘glaze’ of assorted transparent colours to achieve the desired effect. Delighted by the outcome, this technique was used in subsequent works, exemplified by Rainbow Hare #2 & Rainbow Hare #3, showcasing even more vibrant manifestations.
Rainbow’s Shoulder stands as a testament to this experimentation—a successful prototype, if you will. Its inception marks a pivotal moment in the artist’s journey, demonstrating a willingness to explore new techniques and textures. We invite you to delve into its depths and appreciate the fusion of emotion and technique encapsulated within its strokes.
In my journey as an artist, I’ve tried various surfaces & colours: from acrylics on boxed canvas to the refined oils on board I now employ. Each combination wields a distinct influence over the final outcome. Canvas imbues a rustic charm, its weave adding texture. For intricate details, only oil on board suffices, offering subtle nuances and unmatched blendability.
Yet, my attention extends beyond the artwork itself; the frames for Original Artworks hold equal significance. Through experience, I’ve learnt how a well-selected frame can elevate a piece, sometimes even reshaping its interpretation. Every choice, from canvas to frame, is a deliberate step towards crafting not just art, but an experience.
