Let’s delve into the enchanting world of Otter #2. While rumours persist of otters roaming the nearby River Kennet (Gary swears he’s spotted one), securing quality reference material remains a challenge.
A visit to an Otter rescue centre in Cornwall held promise of abundant references. However, these elusive creatures proved too swift for our lenses, leaving our efforts unrewarded. Nevertheless, armed with the limited resources available at the time, I endeavoured to capture the essence of these remarkable animals.
For any wildlife artist, the quest for suitable references is a familiar struggle. Yet, reflecting on the outcome of Otter #2, I dare say it turned out rather well, wouldn’t you agree? The painting evokes a sense of fluid movement, with bubbles swirling around the startled otter as it locks eyes with the viewer.
Highlights abound in this portrayal: from the subtle emergence of a snaggletooth to the vibrant hues adorning its crown and chest. Not to mention the playful splashes of water at its side, achieved with a simple yet effective technique—an old toothbrush loaded with paint and flicked across the canvas.
In hindsight, Otter #2 stands as a testament to perseverance and creative ingenuity, capturing the whimsical spirit of these elusive creatures amidst their aquatic habitat.
