“I Spied a Hare” embodies a wintry ambiance, both in its mood and artistic execution. This captivating study was inspired by a remarkable encounter experienced by my partner, Gary, with the titular character.
The encounter unfolded one solemn winter morning in the field adjacent to our former residence. Amidst the somber winter landscape, a crop of barley lay dormant. The farmer’s plan was to plough it back into the earth come springtime. Unbeknownst to many, this field served as natural camouflage for an old Jack hare. Over the weeks we saw him, it was clear that he would conceal himself amidst the frozen remnants of the harvest. However, the morning’s hoar frost rendered the landscape rigid, allowing Gary to approach the hare ever-closer. The result? The photograph that served as the direct inspiration for the artwork.
Enthralled by the moment, Gary was compelled to pen a poem titled “I Spied a Hare,” which seamlessly found its place alongside the original canvas, adding an additional layer of depth to the composition.
“I Spied a Hare” has garnered widespread acclaim over the years, captivating audiences with its evocative charm and timeless allure, weaving its enchanting spell on all who are fortunate enough to encounter it.
