Original Artwork, in Oils with Gold Leaf embellishment.
Owls play a significant role in Otherwurlde, often as ‘Guardians’. While we typically envision larger owls like the Eagle Owl (Pearls of Wisdom), it’s not always about size, but cunning and practicality. That’s why we’re thrilled to showcase a Little Owl in The Watchers.
Not all creatures need dense forests or high vantage points. Our Little Owl perches on a fallen tree surrounded by buttercups and moths, illuminated against a midnight sky. His companion, a bold fieldmouse in matching armour, carries a small spear and a cherry-red banner. Their tale is one of quiet vigilance.
The Little Owl’s armour mirrors the intricate design of the Eagle Owl’s, with similar motifs and weathered edges, adding a touch of history. The 22ct gold leaf, applied by Ann with care, contrasts beautifully with the midnight blue background, evoking a sense of Byzantine splendour.
The armour’s luminous highlights are particularly striking, thanks to the special paint we imported from Japan. The glow is hard to capture in photos, but in person, it creates a patina-like effect that’s captivating.
Finally, the piece is framed in hand-distressed antique gold, float-mounted on a midnight-blue backboard. The subtle shadow cast around the painting enhances its depth, making it feel as though it’s projected forward—creating a lasting impression.
Throughout my journey as an artist, I’ve tried various surfaces & colours… From acrylics on boxed canvas to the refined oils on board I now employ. Each combination wields a distinct influence over the final outcome. Canvas imbues a rustic charm, its weave adding texture. For intricate details, only oil on board suffices, offering subtle nuances and unmatched ability to blend.
Yet, my attention extends beyond the artwork itself; the frames for Original Artworks hold equal significance. Through experience, I’ve learnt how a well-selected frame can elevate a piece, sometimes even reshaping its interpretation. Every choice, from canvas to frame, is a deliberate step towards crafting not just art, but an experience.
