Among the earliest entries in our collection, ‘The Pilgrims‘, held pivotal significance in shaping subsequent artworks’ themes and aesthetics. After a series of ambitious paintings, Ann took a moment to reflect on the journey thus far. Revisiting an early work to ‘see how they were getting on’ seemed fitting. Thus, ‘Pilgrims Rest…’ emerged, a return to familiar characters.
In this wintry scene, our heroes find themselves on an exposed hillside, yet enjoy spiritual protection. The Hare tends to camp, and instead of a roaring fire, a magical lamp illuminates the scene. Fireflies dance around it, an enchanting sight amidst the snow and clouds. An old Celtic Knot etched into living rock adds mystique, reminiscent of ‘Pearls of Wisdom’. An Owl watches over, ensuring all is well.
Beneath the lamp, glowing Anglo-Saxon runes bear an excerpt from John Bunyan’s ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’. Its message encourages perseverance on the righteous path, resonating with the painting’s essence.
