The ‘Into the Valley’ diptych marked an important step forward in my practice. Firstly, it capped a successful sequence of Hares, mostly painted in a distinctive style that revolved around ‘tendrils of colour’. The deliberate use of these rich blue & purple tones, draws inspiration directly from my ‘Purple Hare’ series, which was a prevalent influence during the creation of this piece. Upon reflection, I cannot help but acknowledge the unmistakable echoes of Van Gogh’s distinctive style—a homage that I wear with pride.
Secondly, the very nature of a diptych allowed the use (and extension of) a common horizon across two paintings. What’s remarkable, is that a number of years were to pass between each one in the sequence. In practical terms, this meant that I had to ‘re-find’ the style of work when it came to the second half of the sequence!
Throughout my journey as an artist, I’ve tried various surfaces & colours… From acrylics on boxed canvas to the refined oils on board I now employ. Each combination wields a distinct influence over the final outcome. Canvas imbues a rustic charm, its weave adding texture. For intricate details, only oil on board suffices, offering subtle nuances and unmatched ability to blend.
Yet, my attention extends beyond the artwork itself; the frames for Original Artworks hold equal significance. Through experience, I’ve learnt how a well-selected frame can elevate a piece, sometimes even reshaping its interpretation. Every choice, from canvas to frame, is a deliberate step towards crafting not just art, but an experience.
