Welcome to what is perhaps one of my most cherished pieces of wildlife art: the Fallow Deer! Allow me to guide you through the intricate process of its creation.
Firstly, I meticulously applied Gesso onto the board in deliberate strokes and lines, particularly within the outlines of the majestic antlers. This technique was employed to ensure that when colour was added, these features of the animal would truly stand out. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that they possess a remarkable three-dimensional quality, holding paint in a manner that suggests depth and texture.
Moving on to the surrounding foliage, specifically the Rhododendron, I drew inspiration from sketches taken within a nearby plantation. These sketches served as the foundation for a meticulously hand-cut, two-layer stencil. When applied repeatedly and overlaid with varying tones, they create the illusion of depth extending beyond the Fallow Deer itself.
The final result exudes a touch of the style reminiscent of the renowned Victorian print-maker and illustrator, William Morris. Altogether, my Fallow Deer stands as a deeply satisfying achievement, blending technical precision with artistic inspiration.
Our Fine-Art Prints come on two kinds of archival paper. For everything up to – and including – our ‘Medium’ size, we use 210GSM Fotospeed Smooth Art; a paper that offers exceptional contrast and detail. Because our larger, more prestigious prints need to be more impactful, we use Fotospeed’s 315GSM NST. Thanks to the gentle texture and bright-white base of this 100% cotton, fine art paper, it consequently delivers a wide colour gamut. The Fine Art Trade Guild have also certified these two papers. In conjunction with our pigment-rich inks, we therefore deliver a lifetime’s worth of enjoyment!
