For years, the desire to paint a Kingfisher lingered in my mind, envisioning its vibrant hues enhancing The Carnival of Wonders. Despite numerous sketches, the story of ‘A Bigger Fish’ remained elusive, halting progress.
Yet, amidst waiting for a drying painting (‘Enlightenment’), inspiration struck. I embarked on a sketch featuring the Kingfisher towing a Stickleback balloon, a modest beginning to break the deadlock.
Inspiration flourished further when Gary proposed adding a Blue Tit towing a colossal fish, igniting the narrative: ‘There’s always a bigger fish!’ This theme resonates universally, particularly among anglers.
The painting’s intricacies delight: from the Stickleback’s blue-green armour to the Carp’s iridescent scales. The Kingfisher’s adornments, reminiscent of Aladdin’s lamp, add whimsy, blending seamlessly with its plumage and armour.
Notably, the Blue Tit steals the scene, oblivious to its impact on the regal Kingfisher. It’s a humble reminder that life’s surprises often humble us, reinforcing the adage, ‘Always a Bigger Fish!’
In this artwork’s fusion of avian whimsy and piscine intrigue, I find joy. It speaks to life’s unexpected turns and the humbling lessons they impart, encapsulating the essence of my artistic journey.
Our Fine-Art Prints use archival papers in two weights. For everything up to – and including – our ‘Signature Editions’, we use 210gsm Fotospeed Smooth; a versatile paper that offers exceptional contrast and detail. For the larger ‘Premium Editions’, we use Fotospeed’s 315gsm NST. Thanks to subtle textures similar to traditional etching papers, coupled to bright-white bases, both of these 100%-cotton, fine-art papers deliver revelatory, impactful images that will stand the test of time. Furthermore, we only ever use OEM inks that are rich in pigments & offer a consistent level of reproduction.
