The Healer’s Gift is set on a beautiful moonlit evening, as the White Stag (the ‘healer’) & his Shaman reach the forest; their arrival awaited by the creatures of the forest… In this beautiful painting, the stag is transformed into the archetype of a spiritual healer; the Squirrel becomes his ‘Shaman’: the channel through which the magic flows. Together, they heal the sick, restore vitality to the woodlands & bring peace to the land.
The stag wears a magnificent emerald-studded headpiece. About his neck are a string of bells that announce his arrival, and an impressive gorget in solid-gold, studded with moonstones.
Standing between the antlers, is the Shaman himself. In addition to his bright red fez (which bestows status in the Otherwurlde), he wears a bejewelled & armoured breastplate and from his belt, hangs another bell. He proudly holds a staff, that’s topped with a glowing orb: a larger version of this potent talisman last appeared in ‘The Promise of Spring’, where a Dryad was using it to ‘wake up the wood’ after a long winter. Here, the Shaman uses it to channel the Healer’s gift, when treating individual animals.
The Shaman’s little hut sits on the stag’s back; its little platform intertwined with the roots of a vine and the tooled-leather saddle. Look again and you might spot the glowing embers of a fireplace within its shadows and wisps of smoke drifting lazily from the opening at the roof. There are bubbles, too. Bubbles and a balloon… Not every painting gets a balloon: but savour them when they appear, for they represent ‘pure magic’…
There’s something so gentle – and calming – about the expression on our stag, that at once reassures and soothes. You can almost believe there’s a truth to what you’re seeing…
Throughout my journey as an artist, I’ve tried various surfaces & colours… From acrylics on boxed canvas to the refined oils on board I now employ. Each combination wields a distinct influence over the final outcome. Canvas imbues a rustic charm, its weave adding texture. For intricate details, only oil on board suffices, offering subtle nuances and unmatched ability to blend.
Yet, my attention extends beyond the artwork itself; the frames for Original Artworks hold equal significance. Through experience, I’ve learnt how a well-selected frame can elevate a piece, sometimes even reshaping its interpretation.
