Issue #11: January, 2021

Dear Subscriber...

Hello and welcome to our 11th Newsletter! This is Ann's partner, Gary: How are you all doing?

I'm writing this on the day after Boxing Day, a little befuddled at the way this year's Christmas panned out... Both Ann & I, have been listless and fidgety as we faced a holiday like no other and I'm sure that we weren't alone.

We were SO grateful, then, to hear from some of you over the past few days, telling us how certain gifts had gone down with unsuspecting loved ones! It made us feel a little more connected to you and even more encouraged for the year ahead. Bring it on!

Here in Wiltshire, we're currently still in Tier #2, but with neighbouring counties at Tier #3, it's only a matter of time before we go the same way. So, as the haze clears and we catch our first glimpse of the New Year, let's hope that things really DO start to calm down. The vaccine's here. Brexit appears to have been sorted out and...

...I don't know about you, but we'd just like things to be 'Normal' for a while!

The Craft Market in Cirencester is due to re-open on January 2nd, but at this stage, we just don't know if it actually will.

So, in the absence of anything better to do, we've decided to go back to work; Ann to the Studio and me, back to sorting out the Etsy shop.

And then... A show?

Thank You for your continued support.

That's enough rambling: let's see what Ann's been up to!

'One Cool Cat...'

This cobwebbed-bunch of keys has one particular key missing!

It's the key to 'The Cheesery': that special pantry full of savoury delights! So it's no surprise that the castle's beautiful Gingery-Tom has it hanging around his neck: he knows just how far the Mousey-Harlequins will go, to get their little hands on some Vintage Cheese!
First, they've managed to get hold of a pink felt mouse, that's stuffed with Catnip! One mouse, just out of the picture, but given away by his shadow, is pulling it away, in the hope of distracting the key's guardian...

Another mouse, has climbed up onto the round window and is bobbing one of the Castle's goldfish up and down on the end of a string...

I love the bubbles here: this MIGHT be a fish out of water, but it looks pretty
comfortable!
And here's the third and final Mouse! As he reaches up to the key you get a clear view of the
costume. At first, Ann's research was leading her towards the classic 'Pierrot' clown, but this proved a little cumbersome for these little thieves, so she went with the Harlequin look instead. With its distinctive black and white diamonds, it's a style that spells 'mischief' even today!

And through it all, 'the cat in the hat' stays unruffled. With his ornate monocle & Fez, Surely, he IS 'One Cool Cat'!

'One Cool Cat...' is all about patience: something we've all had to find reserves of this past year! It's about staying true to one's self, in the face of provocation. It also conjures a spirit of resilience. Of staying above the 'hurly-burly', in order to see the bigger picture.

The Cat sees all. Of course he does. He merely chooses not to react.

If only Ann were a little like that, when confronted with chocolate!!

'Work-in-Progress'

How about this for a first glimpse of something new? Another large-scale work, this new picture features an impressive Eagle Owl, looking out at a 'challenging landscape'. What you can't yet see, is that - for someone - there's a choice to make...

This is a fraction of the under-painting, with which Ann 'blocks-out' - or plans - the picture. The colours used at this stage, are vital, as they will underpin the oils to be laid-down later. But already, in the eyes, you get a sense of the Owl's majesty. I have a sneaky feeling, this one could be something rather special...

More next time!

After a three-year hiatus, we've decided to re-open our Etsy shop! They're giving incentives at the moment, for sellers offering Free Postage to customers in the USA... So, it seemed the right thing to do.

As a result, our prices have altered slightly, but we still offer:

FREE STANDARD POSTAGE ON ANY ORDER, WORLDWIDE!

Options for Tracked & Signed-For services are still there of course, but this is a step-change for the better and simplifies things massively!

I'll be adding new products to Etsy most days, but it'll still be a while before the complete range is all there.

Etsy isn't for everyone, but we think it'll be a good way for us to grow the audience, particularly in the 'States.

Rest assured however, that this Newsletter will be the only place to get news of forthcoming work. Stay tuned!

The Collection...

Before I close, let's see how the collection is shaping up...
The Dreamcatchers by Ann Richmond - A beguiling artwork featuring an armoured Grizzly Bear & Hare as they catch Flying Fish. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
The Bear & the Hare are so intent on catching Flying Fish, they haven't spotted TWO problems... First, their 'water globe' has lost a balloon and will soon slump to the ground, thus freeing the catch... Second? They haven't noticed the waterfall! 'The Dreamcatchers' reminds us to keep an eye on the 'nitty-gritty', when embarking on a new project or quest...
'Quicksilver!' is all about the pursuit of something that's forever out of reach - when you're after something as fast as a Barracuda, the chase (and the chasing) is all that matters!
Quicksilver! by Ann Richmond - An inspiring artwork featuring an Oranda Carp & Frog. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
Strangers in a Strange Land by Ann Richmond - A mysterious artwork featuring an armoured Flamingo & Pug dog. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
Trudging through the dangerous valley in order to reach their destination, the King's Emissary and his trusty Flamingo are glad of a shortcut provided by their Turtle guide... Truly, they are 'Strangers in a Strange Land'.
A patient Fox waits at the shoreline, for his 'Journey's End'. Whatever he's learnt along the way, is of more value to him, than what's in the treasure chest!
Journey's End by Ann Richmond - An enigmatic artwork featuring a Red Fox pilgrim sitting on a beach. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
Two greedy Guard-Mice doze after gorging themselves on stolen grain: but not for much longer: their Sergeant is armed with a dagger & a giant red balloon!

'The Big Bang!'
A 'Special Delivery' is summoning both the Dryad and her companion back to the King's Court. Their idyll is over; it's time to return.
Special Delivery by Ann Richmond - An enigmatic artwork featuring a Dryad and her Red Fox companion. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
Looking back, I think the inspiration for 'Foxy Lady' comes somewhere between the 'Queen of Hearts' from Lewis Carroll's 'Alice' and a classical portrait of Queen Elizabeth I... See the jewels sparkling in her tiara? They were actually faceted sequins!
The Frog Prince has tried everything to get the Princess's attention and to no avail. There's only one thing left to try...!

'She Loves Me...?'
'Gentleman Jack' began life as a traditional portrait of a Hare, but Ann always felt as though something was missing... That is, until she added the blue necktie & brown Topper, with its natty band & feathers.
Life these days is pretty chaotic, what with one thing and another... sometimes, it feels as though we're 'Playing With the Elements' just to make it all work!
Playing With the Elements by Ann Richmond - A beautiful artwork featuring a Dryad, surrounded by numerous creatures. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
The Old Man of the Sea by Ann Richmond - A stunning artwork featuring a venerable Walrus & attendants. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
The magnificent 'Old Man of the Sea' has returned to shore, with tales of the creatures he's met in the deep: and his support team have set to work, recording them for posterity!
Why is this one called 'Innocence ReForged'? Because whilst the Unicorn's horn might've cracked, there remain good souls out in the world, who can repair & renew it. The bubbles represent purity and perfection. Inside one of them, sits a Scarab Beetle: further reassurance of renewal.
Innocence ReForged by Ann Richmond - A beautiful artwork featuring a graceful Unicorn. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
Grace Under Pressure by Ann Richmond - A beautiful artwork featuring a graceful Dryad with a Mandarin Duck. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
'Grace Under Pressure' adopts a similar theme to that of 'The Whisperer'. However, instead of a white rabbit atop Grace's head, we find a Mandarin Duck! The work was painted onto an aluminium panel and our photographer took care to have its sheen come-through in the prints.
An understandably nervous courier and his rider, encounter a mysterious skull by the roadside. Alongside it, sits an Amethyst. Could THIS be the missing courier? 'What to do, oh, what to do? For the 'Night Mail' MUST get through!'
Night Mail by Ann Richmond - A mysterious artwork featuring a steampunk Hare & Squirrel. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
Harvest For the King by Ann Richmond - A magical artwork featuring a regal, armoured Deer Stag & Magpie. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
There's so much to be said about 'Harvest For the King'.

Let's start with the tree itself: are the apples falling? Or floating?
'Paddle Steamer' carries an important lesson: NEVER take the word of a Toad at face-value! Our friendly Mallard-ferry has a talisman that glows when it's safe to make the crossing. But the Toad insisted...
Paddle Steamer by Ann Richmond - A fabulous artwork featuring an armoured Mallard Duck & Toad. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
The Pilgrims by Ann Richmond - A gentle artwork featuring an armoured Red Fox, Toucan & Hare. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
A soulful, enigmatic work, 'The Pilgrims' represent the
wanderers among us. We don't know from where they've come, nor where they're going.

For them, the journey is all. But they'll know it when they get there...
'The Keeper of the Keys': a picture with secrets that can only be unlocked with our imagination. Why a Toucan? What do the keys open? What (or 'Who') are the balloons lifting up? Then there's the Keeper's ever-vigilant assistant guard...
Keeper of the Keys by Ann Richmond - A mischievous artwork featuring an armoured Toucan & Mouse. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
Count Pugsley by Ann Richmond - A charming artwork featuring a steampunk'd Pug Dog. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.
Ah, 'Count Pugsley'. A Royal Courtier with a distinctive, elegant poise. A dandy, too, with his bold collar of amethysts and the flamboyant Peacock feather in his cap.
'The Whisperer'.
"If you have an important secret to share, you'd better whisper: you never know WHO might be listening!"
The Whisperer by Ann Richmond - A charming artwork of a secretive Dryad and her nosey white rabbit. Painted in the artist's unique style... Framing available.

Well, that's it for now: thanks for having made it this far!

Until next time, Ann & I wish you well and we look forward to seeing & hearing more from you in the weeks to come!
